Windows 10 is notable for its support of universal apps. This feature expands on the Metro style apps that were first introduced with Windows 8. Microsoft's universal apps are designed with code that is nearly identical to work across all Microsoft products, including PCs, tablets and smartphones, Xbox Ones, Surface Hubs, Mixed Reality, Xbox Ones, Surface Hubs and embedded systems.

The Windows user interface was revised to handle transitions between a mouse-oriented interface and a touchscreen-optimized interface based on available input devices--particularly on 2-in-1 PCs, both interfaces include an updated Start menu which incorporates elements of Windows 7's traditional Start menu with the tiles of Windows 8. Windows 10 introduced several new features, including the Microsoft Edge browser, virtual desktops, Task View (a feature for managing windows and desktops), support for face and fingerprint recognition, as well as DirectX 12 and a desktop and window management system.
