Windows 10 is a series of personal computer operating systems developed and distributed by Microsoft under its Windows NT family of operating systems, replacing Windows 8.1 in terms of manufacturing release dates (July 15, 2015 for manufacturing release, July 29, 2015 for retail release), while receiving regular free updates to users; enterprise environments can opt for longer support milestones to receive only critical patches over ten year lifespan of extended support milestones.

Notable aspects of Windows 10's design include its support for universal apps - an expansion on Metro-style apps introduced with Windows 8 initially. Universal apps can be designed to run across several Microsoft product families with near identical code--from PCs, tablets and smartphones through embedded systems, Xbox One and Surface Hub to Mixed Reality headsets and Mixed Reality applications. The Windows user interface was modified to manage transitions from mouse-centric interfaces and touchscreen-optimized ones based on available input devices based on an upgraded Start menu that blends elements of Windows 7's traditional Start menu and tiles from Windows 8 onto two in one PCs, such as 2-in-1 PCs with their hybrid design. Both interfaces provide access to an updated Start menu incorporating elements of each platform that include updated tiles from both OSes. Windows 10 introduced Microsoft Edge web browser, virtual desktop system and Task View window and desktop management feature as well as support for fingerprint and face recognition login, new security features for enterprise environments as well as DirectX 12.
